POLL OF THE DAY (121): A MEATY QUESTION?

POLL OF THE DAY (121): A MEATY QUESTION?

Middle-aged people who eat protein-rich food are four times more likely to die of cancer than someone who only eats a little, according to a recent study.

The researchers claim that eating a lot of protein increased the risk of cancer almost as much as smoking 20 cigarettes a day.

While research on the harm of products such as tobacco are well documented and use is highly regulated by the state, research studies into the harms associated with eating animal protein are not promoted by the government or health officials to the same extent.

Current advice is that meat should be eaten in moderation and that dairy products offer significant health benefits.

Does the public have a right to more balanced information about animal protein so their decisions can be better informed?

Should we ignore studies like this because they come from a minority perspective or should the government be examining these claims further?

If the research is valid then surely this has huge ramifications for countries whose economy relies heavily on the meat and dairy industry.

What do you think?

Feel free to post any information on this issue to the poll's Board- articles, news items, YouTube clips etc. You'll see a link to the Board on the left side menu of this poll.
